How it works

How to use the ZIP to TAR tool

  1. 1

    Upload a ZIP

    Up to 500 MB.

  2. 2

    Choose TAR or TAR.GZ

    Gzip makes it smaller.

  3. 3

    Download

Extract with tar -xf or tar -xzf.

Standard ustar format

Archives are written in the POSIX ustar format that every tar implementation supports. Folder structure and modification dates are preserved; unsafe paths in the ZIP are dropped and reported.

Limitations

We’d rather be upfront about what this tool can’t do yet:

  • Paths longer than the ustar limit (255 characters) are skipped and reported.
  • File permissions default to 644 (files) and 755 (folders).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files are never sent to FreeToolsDaily or anyone else.

How do I extract a .tar.gz?

On Linux/macOS run tar -xzf file.tar.gz. Windows 10+ also includes tar in the command prompt.
