How it works

How to use the Video Compressor tool

  1. 1

    Add a video

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI up to 300 MB.

  2. 2

    Choose compression

Balanced at 720p is a great default for sharing.

  3. 3

    Download the MP4

See exactly how much space you saved.

How it shrinks videos

Videos are re-encoded with H.264 (the format every phone and browser plays) using a quality-based setting (CRF), and optionally scaled down. Dropping from 4K or 1080p to 720p alone often cuts size by 60–80% while still looking sharp on phones.

Private and free

FFmpeg runs inside your browser via WebAssembly, so your videos never leave your device and there are no upload waits or size-based fees.

Limitations

We’d rather be upfront about what this tool can’t do yet:

  • Encoding in a browser is slower than desktop software — roughly real-time for 720p on a modern laptop.
  • Files over 300 MB aren’t supported.
  • If the original is already well compressed, you’ll be told instead of getting a larger file.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files are never sent to FreeToolsDaily or anyone else.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The first time, your browser downloads the FFmpeg engine (about 30 MB). It’s cached afterwards, so later conversions start almost instantly.

Is there a file size limit?

Up to 300 MB per file. Processing happens in your browser’s memory, so very long or 4K videos may be slow on older phones.

What settings for WhatsApp?

Balanced at 720p keeps most clips well under WhatsApp’s limits while looking good on phones.
