How words are counted

FreeToolsDaily uses your browser's language-aware word segmentation, so it counts words correctly in English and in many other languages, including Hindi, Spanish and German. Contractions like “don't” count as one word, and numbers count as words, matching the way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time is based on an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute; speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations and speeches.

Limitations

We’d rather be upfront about what this tool can’t do yet:

  • Counts for languages written without spaces (such as Chinese or Japanese) depend on your browser's segmentation and may differ slightly from other tools.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser as you type. Your text is never uploaded, stored or logged.

Does the word counter count numbers?

Yes, numbers like 2026 count as words, just as in Microsoft Word.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

About 750 words at a typical speaking pace of 150 words per minute. Paste your script to see its speaking time.

What is keyword density?

The share of all words that a particular word makes up. Very high values for one word can make writing feel repetitive.
