Turn any PDF, including scanned documents, passports and ID cards, into a Word document you can change, reuse and reformat.
How it works
How to use the PDF to Word tool
- 1
Upload a PDF
Choose any PDF: a normal text PDF exported from Word or a website, or a scanned document such as a passport, ID card or signed form.
- 2
Convert
FreeToolsDaily reads the text and rebuilds paragraphs, headings and lists from the page layout.
- 3
Edit in Word
Download the .docx file and open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
How the conversion works
A PDF doesn't store paragraphs; it stores individual pieces of text at exact positions on the page. FreeToolsDaily analyses those positions to work out lines, joins lines into paragraphs, recognises headings from their larger font size, detects bullet and numbered lists, and keeps bold and italic styling. Each PDF page starts on a new page in Word.
The result is a clean, editable document that's easy to restyle. It's ideal for reusing the text of reports, letters, articles and contracts.
Scanned PDFs
If your PDF is a scan or a photo of a document, such as a passport, Aadhaar or PAN card, certificate or signed form, it contains pictures of text rather than text itself. FreeToolsDaily detects this automatically and gives you three choices: an exact copy that looks identical to the PDF, the copy plus editable text, or editable text only.
Editable text is read with OCR (optical character recognition) directly on your device, so your ID documents are never uploaded anywhere. It supports English, Hindi, Marathi and 15 other languages, and pages scanned sideways are straightened automatically. Proofread names, numbers and dates afterwards.
Limitations
We’d rather be upfront about what this tool can’t do yet:
- For normal text PDFs, tables, columns, headers/footers and exact positioning are not reproduced; the focus is on clean, editable text.
- Scanned PDFs are converted with OCR, which recognises text but not formatting such as bold, tables or columns — and can misread unclear characters.
- Unusual fonts with broken text encoding can produce garbled characters, the same as copying text from that PDF would.
